But have we ever sat back and thought about the effect of its power on our society? Technology has influenced on essential things in our lives. The Internet is one kind of technologies that has helped people many things in our lives and if without it, we would not know what to do instead. E-mail gave me the chance to be in touch with someone who dying far away? (Tannen 646). People can get in touch with others who live far away in only a second by sending an e-mail or making a phone call. People can even look at each others when they are far away by using webcam over the Internet or making a video phone. Technology can make impossible things to become possible ones. ?When my friend Larry died, how much it meant that the telephone made it possible to spend a day talking to others who knew him. How much it meant that Larry said goodbye. This is a gift he gave me, and technology made it possible.? Technology and its power encourage people to do things that they can not do without technology. For exampl e, I would had left my country, Vietnam, coming to America because I knew that I can keep in touch with my relatives and my friends who are in Vietnam easily by using the Internet or telephone anytime I want to. By reading ?The library card? in our textbook, I know that African-American could not read some kinds of books in the early of twentieth century. ?There was a huge library near the riverfront, but I knew that Negros were not allowed to patronize its selves any more than they were the parks and playgrounds of the city? (Wright, 136). If technology had grown at that time, everybody would have read what they want to read without going to a library.

I spoke with Michael Clinton; Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing officer who works for Hearst Corporation. Hearst Corporation is one of our nation’s leading magazine publishers, including Harper’s Bazaar Magazine. Mr. Clinton responded with enthusiasm to my questions regarding his duties as Chief Marketing Officer for Harper’s Bazaar where he is in charge of all publications that are published in magazines for the Hearst Company. He makes certain that all ads are perfectly laid out and that paying ad customers are happy with their layouts before printing. He clued me in on some vital information which I found extraordinarily useful in my search for knowledge in the marketing and communications field. I began asking Mr. Clinton if he felt that the magazine industry was worthwhile in today’s trying economical hardships and he answered by filling me in on why he felt that his job would always be beneficial, no matter what trying times the country endured. He felt that, in his honest opinion that society would always purchase magazines and his reasons were that magazines are always priced so that consumers are able to afford them since they are almost never priced beyond what reading consumers can afford. Global Warming, or what has been called the Greenhouse effect, is the result of a fourfold ecological process. 1-Sunlight radiates from the sun, through space, to Earth’s atmosphere. 2- The sunlight enters the atmosphere and hits Earth. Some of it turns into heat energy in the form of infrared light. Memento is a film about a man, called Lenny, who seeks to find the man who raped and killed his wife during a burglary. What makes this harder for him is that he suffers from short-term memory loss. To cope with his condition, he takes many photographs with his Polaroid camera and tattoos his body in order to direct him to the man who killed his wife. The film opens with slow, peaceful music. The music chosen by Nolan is perfect; it gives the audience a calm peaceful atmosphere, settling the audience to contrast what is to come soon on. Additionally, as one note changes to the other, the previous note can still be heard, fading into the background until gone, much like Lenny’s memory. The credits fade into blue, and then fade out to white. This is a perfect representation of Lenny’s memory; because as he learns about the past it quickly fades away. The choice of colours Nolan chose are very effective. White represents purity and innocence, this is chosen well as Lenny believes he is doing the right thing, yet he lacks depth stability to hold onto his memories, which is commonly associated with the colour blue. After part of the credits, a Polaroid picture appears on the screen. Held by a clean, gentle looking hand. On the picture, we see a dead body, with large amounts of blood on the wall behind it. Nolan does this to make the audience feel the aggression and power of the kill. Despite this, the calm and peaceful atmosphere still lingers, the music still plays and we notice the background is green, unlike the white background in the picture. This and safe looking hand, gives the audience some distance from the murder, making them feel safer and further away from the murder. Because of this, the audience will feel upset for the Lenny who is holding it. Lenny begins shaking the Polaroid, and the ink begins to fade away. This tells the audience that the scene is actually in reverse. Nolan does this because we, like Lenny, do not know any events that have occurred in the past. The audience also learn at this point that the movie will be is a ‘reverse mode’. The scenes are chronologically going in reverse but they are actually played forwards. The ink fades from the Polaroid completely, and the camera angle changes and begins to follow the Polaroid until the picture was taken. Once Lenny moves the camera from his face, the audience sees Lenny for the first time. He looks nervous, and the scratch on his face discourages us from believing that the clean hand holding the photo earlier is actually him. Also the music stops at the camera flash, and the audience feelings change to the new music playing; eerie and suspicious. The hand was misleading, as well as the colour of the walls seen in the previous shot. This makes the audience become suspicious about Lenny, and to wonder why he is really there. Our feelings for Lenny have completely changed as we discover more about him. The audience first felt that he was a good guy, but now the audience are starting to believe that Lenny is a cold-hearted murdered. Nolan arouses these suspicious to draw the audience into the story. Nolan gives hints in the scene that Lenny has killed before. Firstly, when we see his face, his expression is rather dull and emotionless, and shows no regret or guilt what so ever. Nolan also makes a clear connection between the camera and a gun. For example, Lenny slips his camera out of the inside of his jacket like it was a gun. The camera flash also sounds like a bullet is being fired. Furthermore this heightens our feelings on Lenny, making us even more suspicious about Lenny. As the scene goes on, we see blood climbing up Teddy’s skin. This is a very powerful clip as it extends the brutality seen previously in the Polaroid. The gore of it sends the audience a shock, and emphasis the power of the kill. The extreme close up of the bullet overpowers the audience, and leaves a cold shadow over them. It informs the audience that it was defiantly murder that had taken place, and that it was by a gun. The glasses, thought bloodstained and cracked, stereotype an intelligent, good person. We assume that whomever they belonged too was innocent of death, and therefore making the audience feel worse about Lenny. Glasses usually help one to see better, yet with no face behind them the audience themselves find it hard to see the mystery of the man, and therefore making his death seem unreasonable. The low angle shot of Lenny makes the audience feel smaller than he is, making him seem more dominant, powerful and threatening. Nolan does this to keep pressuring the thought on the audience that Lenny is the killer. In conclusion, Nolan uses many effects in the first scene to establish a general feeling from the audience, that Lenny is a killer. Nolan has used various types of effects to deliver his messages. Poetry anyalsis of the Root Cellar Essay Root Cellar After reading the poem written by Theodore Rotted, entitled Root Cellar, I envisioned a dark, scary, ghost story. The poem was very understandable to read and on the surface it explains vegetables in a root cellar. The text has a literal meaning of that but the figurative language Rotted used in his poem painted a very different picture then a plan root cellar, I saw dead and living things In the dark. Believe the poem Root Cellar is about more than just an underground pantry of vegetables, but instead Rotted is trying to tell a story of a scary place where things were still leaving ND he was frightened of this place. Voice, language, and imagery in Theodore Reroutes Root Cellar gave the feeling of horror and disgust. Rotted explains It is a dark looming place, smelly and old. The poem filled with words such as dank, dark, and manure. These words have a pessimistic tone. He hated the place he was speaking of. I believe the poem portraits a place where ghost are Inhabited and Rotted Is afraid and wishes to not go there. The title of the poem is Root Cellar. A root cellar is built on to a farmhouse and is used as natures way of storing fruits and vegetables and anything that needs to stay lolled. They can be excellent storage areas for other things as well. Unlike a basement a root cellar is not accessible from the house. You must leave the house to enter the root cellar. In this case things can be hidden away from public view. Secret things could have been going on down there that few could have ever see or know about. When Rotted says nothing would sleep in the first line, I started to imagine ghost or half dead things still living not resting. Then he describes the cellars environment by calling It dank as a ditch (1 The word dank means damp or humid. This secretive word gives the feeling of a place that is not comfortable to stay in. The environment was different then normal conditions and Rotted did not like to go down there and when had to. He did not linger down there long. The description of the bulbs hunting for chinks in the dark(2) is a great picture to Imagine. Hunt means to pursue so as to capture, and chinks are a narrow opening like a crack. This line supports the idea of a ghost story because it is commonly known that ghost hunt or haunt in the dark. Chinks can refer to ghost looking for a place out because they are refined to a certain place to haunt. When I think of ghost, I envision white sheets and chains hanging off them, and them moving In a relaxed hunched way Like zombies. In lines three and four Rotted further supported my thesis that the Root Cellar is about ghost; shoots dangled and drooped (3), lolling obscenely from mildewed crates (4). Dangled and drooped is which is talking about the ghost motion. Obscenely is defined as to be offensive to accepted standards. Ghosts are definitely offensive and not acceptable. People well sometimes move to a new home if they think a ghost inhabits their place. Mildew is armorial found in root cellars or damp places but the fact that it can fill the room with an awful smell. Rotted pointed out the mildewed crates not only to give descriptive picture of the sight but also to give the reader a smell of in that cellar. Everyone can identify with what mildew looks and smells like. With the reputation of bad smelling terms and the explication mark at the end of this line leaves the reader to sense that Rotted is serious and is now stressing his negative feeling and fear toward the root cellar. Ghosts tend to stay around and haunt and torment the living unless you get someone to exterminate him or her. In the line roots ripe as old bait (7) Rotted is not talking about roots of the vegetables but is referring to the ghost. Bait is a lure, and can also mean to tease or torment. The ghosts were fully prepared and were ridiculing in that cellar. Ripe easily refers to fruits and vegetables but its plain definition states; sufficiently advanced, mature, and opportune. These ghosts were not a new addition to this cellar but are old. They have been down there for a long time and are quite ready and ripe for anyone to come in. I suppose if you believe in ghost then you have some idea of what they are made of. Some say they are nothing and can go through walls, and others believe they are slimy or gross like movies make them out to be, but then again all living things are different then there is probably different kinds of ghost.
